Anonymous: do you think you will ever try to go vegan?
I would love to, but my husband likes cheese too much and he does all the cooking! He was the furthest thing from a vegetarian when we got together, and now he hasn’t cooked a meal with meat in over a year. So I feel like asking him to cut out cheese as well would be kind of selfish.
We’ve pretty much limited dairy to only cheese, and I check labels pretty obsessively so I don’t eat anything with gelatin, carmine, or other creepy animal ingredients that I’m aware of. This has ruined a lot of food for me (LUCKY CHARMS!) but I feel good not eating those things, so I can only imagine how great I’d feel if I managed to cut out cheese too. I think the real issue is that no one in my town sells Daiya vegan cheese. We could do it in a heartbeat if we could only find it somewhere. The cheese substitutes we’ve tried so far have, by and large, tasted exactly like cheesy plastic.
My main motivation, as much as I love animals, is my own health and recovery from an eating disorder. It’s pretty amazing how much vegetarianism has changed my feelings about food, while still allowing a healthy level of control over what I will or won’t eat.
